LOOKS:
James Bond is Kind of a Prick - I saw this too-little-seen YouTube parody video on a RudeTube repeat and tracked it down online. Absolutely hilarious and bloody catchy to boot.
The Walking Dead Q&A Panels - the obsession continues unabated. "An Evening with The Walking Dead" and the "Paleyfest 2013" panels were particular highlights.
Derek - Ricky Gervais' Channel 4 comedy drama has been a real treat. Laugh out loud hilarious one minute, and then heart-breakingly serious the next. Rarely has a comedy drama juggled gasped guffaws and tear-jerking pathos so skilfully.

"Sleb" - my next new script...
I'm on a bit of a roll at the moment. "Cold Shadows" came together surprisingly quickly in the writing process, and I'm very pleased with the first draft - so pleased that there's only a few minor tweaks planned for it, once I've bashed out the first draft of my next script, titled "Sleb", that is.

Double Bill Mini Musings: Utterly Bizarre/Utterly Average...
Taxidermia:
What's it about?
A Hungarian film that concerns three generations of men, all of whom have their own twisted obsessions - sex, speed-eating, and taxidermy.
Who would I recognise in it?
You'd have to be a connoisseur of Hungarian film.
Great/Good/Alright/Shite?
Bizarre, weird, disturbing, freakish, and more such words all work to describe (in the best possible way) this foreign language treat. It's a film about an idea - a strong central conceit of obsession - told across three individual, yet linked, tales. It's not a film for vegetarians, mind you - there's close up shots of hacked meat and organs galore. Strangely fascinating with a unique vision, Taxidermia can be a grimace-inducing ride, but ultimately it proves to be a satisfying endeavour. Grotesque, strange, controlled, and oddly beautiful in equal measure. Good.

Saints Row IV Teaser Trailer Analysis...
It's official: combining “Enter the Dominatrix” (originally intended for DLC) with new content, Volition and Deep Silver will be releasing the sequel to the highly successful (and highly entertaining) Saints Row The Third later this year - the month before GTA V's launch. It was announced in a brief teaser trailer packed full of hard-rocking insanity – but let's take a closer look at some of the details we got caught a glimpse of.

The Case of the Bloody Iris (Giuliano Carnimeo, 1971) DVD Review...
Read more giallo reviews here.
With The Case of the Bloody Iris, fans of gialli will
experience one of the era's best examples, particularly as it shares much of
the same talent as another prime representative of the lurid murder mystery
movement – The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh (Sergio Martino, 1971).
Both films star Edwige (Strip Nude For Your Killer, Phantom of Death)
Fenech and George (My Dear Killer, All The Colours of the Dark) Hilton,
while boasting superb scripts from Ernesto (Torso, Almost Human)
Gastaldi, and crystalline editing by Eugenio (Oasis of Fear, The Good The
Bad and The Ugly) Alabiso. Suffice to say, if you were a fan of landmark
giallo The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh, you will be treated to a similarly
luxuriant banquet of sumptuous visuals, sinister chills, and otherworldly
beauty...

General screenwriting update...
So what's been going on?
I've been beavering away on different scripts all at different stages, that's what.
Recently I posted that I was working on a new script called "Cold Shadows". Well, Draft 1.2 (first draft plus a few tweaks and tidying up) is complete! The writing process was very smooth throughout, and I found myself more eager than ever before to put fingers-to-keyboard. Naturally, all of my previous, accumulated experience in writing comes together on each brand new script (and draft) - the first draft of each new screenplay becomes easier and faster to write. Plus - as should be the way - each new script exhibits improved writing ... the progress is all in the correct direction and my desire to be a screenwriter continues to grow stronger with each new project I set my mind to.
But that's not all I've been up to on the screenwriting front...

Triple Bill Mini Musings: Powers, Writing, and Eastwood...
Chronicle:
What's it about?
Three teens tumble down a veritable rabbit hole and come out the other side with telekinetic superpowers. At first it's a bit of fun, but then things take a darker turn as their powers grow and the disaffected youth in their midst slowly caves in.
Who would I recognise in it?
Michael Kelly.
Great/Good/Alright/Shite?
Written by Max Landis (yes, he is), the film kicks off with some dreadfully blunt 'found footage' tropes and some gear-crunchingly clunky dialogue - indeed, I damn-near turned the film off - but I had heard so many good things about it that I figured it must get better, and get better it does. Once the teens (mopey loner with parental problems, his arrogant cousin, and the popular jock with political aspirations) gain their superpowers, things get fun - what would superpowered teenagers do? They'd play pranks, blow up girls' skirts, and learn how to fly (the latter proving to be a spellbinding sequence that makes you wish you could fly too) ... but with the pressures of high school particularly crushing for one of the trio, things move into dark territory in a satisfying way that culminates in a thrilling finale. The biggest problem with the film though is the 'found footage' approach - I'm sick to death of this style. Yes, it's worked well in some instances, but it's so over-done now, and the biggest problems with it remain in place.
