Hot Dog … The Movie! (Peter Markle, 1984) Review

Find more exploitation reviews here.

“Rotate outta here, Jack!” Coming atcha from the hedonistic era of 1980s sex comedies, Hot Dog … The Movie! is, simply put, a mix of gratuitous nudity and even more gratuitous skiing. On the crisp white slopes there will be saucy goings-on and searing competition between the boozing Americans and their devious European counterparts – but who will be victorious?...

Flavours of the Month: October & November 2020...

Struggles continue to be endured, but we're still standing and putting one foot in front of the other. Anyway, spooky doings, a Russian snail, and an exceedingly colourful 1947 are just some of what's been setting the tone of my October & November 2020...

The Dallas Connection (Christian Drew Sidaris, 1994) Review

Find more exploitation reviews here.

“I guess you could say I blasted myself out of the rough.” After what was essentially a reboot to the 'L.E.T.H.A.L. Ladies' franchise with 1993's Enemy Gold, Christian 'Son of Andy' Sidaris returned with this 'soft sequel' in which the hunky/gorgeous agents of 'The Agency' are tasked with protecting the launch of a cutting edge anti-arms satellite. If only they weren't so easily seduced...

Season of the Witch (George A. Romero, 1972) Blu-Ray Review...

Find more movie reviews here.

“I thought you were intrigued by it when you were so afraid. Being afraid is necessary to believing.” While it came as a commercial disappointment, the second in as many years for George A. Romero (following on from 1971's There's Always Vanilla), his 1972 film Season of the Witch proves to be an intriguing companion piece to its predecessor. Amidst the fervour of social change that was sweeping America at the time (particularly the campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment), Season of the Witch peeks behind the white picket fences of suburbia to witness one housewife's attempt to escape her mid-life malaise – through Witchcraft...

Flavours of the Month: August & September 2020

We fight on through the harshness brought about by a family health emergency that has turned things upside down - and all against the continuing wretchedness of the pandemic that makes a hard situation all the harder. Nevertheless, bloody vengeance, Agent 47, and documentaries galore are just some of the flavours of my August & September 2020...

Enemy Gold (Christian Drew Sidaris, 1993) Review

Find more exploitation reviews here.

“You gotta stop thinking of me as just another pretty face.” This ninth entry in the 'L.E.T.H.A.L. Ladies' saga was, originally, never intended to happen. After eight movies, perhaps Andy Sidaris was feeling wrung dry, and so Fit To Kill was supposed to the final film in the series. However, in the movie industry 'final chapters' have a particular habit of being followed by several sequels (Friday the 13th Part IV, anyone?). In some ways it's business as usual in the Sidaris-verse, but in other ways Enemy Gold sits apart from what came before: the smaller cast features only a few familiar faces (all playing different roles), and instead of Andy Sidaris at the helm it's his son Christian Drew Sidaris (who would also go on to write & direct the tenth entry in the franchise). Hell, there's not even a single Abilene family member in sight!...

There's Always Vanilla (George A. Romero, 1971) Blu-Ray Review...

Find more movie reviews here.

“Anything that has something happening has a purpose to it.” An experimental bitter-sweet romance drama is not what you'd expect to be directed by George A. Romero, the Godfather of the modern zombie, whose seminal 1968 film Night of the Living Dead not only defined a new sub-genre, but a new way of utilising horror to examine the world in which we live. Seeking to not be pigeon-holed by the horror genre, Romero and production company The Latent Image embarked on this character piece, which turned into a scattered and tense production with a final product that limped onto the silver screen after which it became a 'lost' film in Romero's catalogue. Indeed, Romero himself described the film as “an awful experience and I care very little about it”, but even with – seemingly – so little going for it, There's Always Vanilla now proves to be an intriguing time capsule of Pittsburgh, and America, in 1970...

Flavours of the Month: June & July 2020...

It's been a rough couple of months in the wake of a family health emergency, which has thrown our lives into the air - and then, as if in some act of the middle finger from forces of fate, it's just been nothing but problems to solve, paperwork to trawl through, and things to take care of around the house - hence the quiet time here on the blog. To put it bluntly it's a living hell, both physically draining and emotionally traumatic. Despite the sheer upheaval of it all, I've picked out time to just bleb out and lose myself in something else...

Flavours of the Month: May 2020...

While I have back-dated this blog post, you may have noticed my absence from the blog in the last few weeks. Unfortunately, we have encountered a family health emergency, which has turned all of our lives upside down and so, naturally, our focuses in our day-to-day lives have shifted. It happened in the last few days of May and since then we've been dealing with a lot of stuff, getting our heads around new things, and just trying to get things in order as well as take care of ourselves, too.

Expect blogging to be light and sporadic for the time being and we'll see how things go when stuff settles down, but for now here's some various flavours of my May 2020 before everything went upside down...

Fit To Kill (Andy Sidaris, 1993) Review

Find more exploitation reviews here.

“It's the sexiest scheme on the screen since James Bond discovered Pussy Galore!” After the somewhat paint-by-numbers Hard Hunted, which lacked some of the vim and vigour of previous outings in the wild and wacky world of Andy Sidaris, Fit To Kill splashes some refreshing Hawaiian water on the franchise's face. Dosed-up on American bravado and topless coffee breaks, it's all about a few simple things: More action! More sex! More cheese ball dialogue! And more, many more, remote control toys!...

The Pyjama Girl Case (Flavio Mogherini, 1978) Blu-Ray Review

Find more giallo reviews here.

“Just because it's written down it's true, huh?” By 1978 the heyday of the Italian murder mystery – or 'giallo' – had been and gone, but that didn't mean there was nothing of interest still to rinse out of the well-strained genre. Writer/Director Flavio Mogherini's murder mystery casts aside much of the classic tropes and visual styling of the typical giallo film (black gloved killers, gleaming knives, an escalating series of grisly deaths, European glamour) in favour of – egads! - just one murder in, of all places, Australia's Sydney with its sun, sea, and sand. Do not go into this movie expecting killer thrills by any means and, whatever you do, don't read the spoilerific blurb on the back of the box!...

Exploitation Nation Issue #8 On Sale Now

Recently I wrote an article for Issue #8 of the movie magazine Exploitation Nation. The theme of the issue is 'Defend a Film', where each contributor writes about a movie they enjoy but which is commonly derided by the wider viewing public. I opted to write about George A. Romero's final film, 2009's Survival of the Dead (which you can find on page 94 of the issue).

Exploitation Nation #8: Witnesses for the Defense! Every movie is someone's favorite and in this issue, we asked our writers to defend a movie only they seem to like. From "Grease 2" to "Ernest Goes to Jail" to "Godzilla '98" to the actor Kevin Costner, we profess our love for the things that we feel deserve more love. PLUS an exclusive interview with director Terry Gilliam and his long-awaited "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote"!
You can get a copy of Exploitation Nation #8 via Amazon in either eBook or paperback format, just follow the links below or search your region's Amazon website.

Hard Hunted (Andy Sidaris, 1992) Review

Find more exploitation reviews here.

“We just go in and kick ass!” / “That's a plan.” International villain Kane returns, but this time he's not playing death games for a sense of honour, oh no, 'cos now this gun runner/all-round bad dude means business. On the hunt for his stolen Klystron Relay (essentially a key to a nuclear bomb), the buff 'n' busty agents of, er, The Agency, dive into a bombastic cat & mouse chase as the plot macguffin has a propensity to change hands almost as many times as the cast's clothing drops to the floor...

Watch FWOAN now!

You can now view the short film "For Want Of A Nail" - for free - online via the OCD Action website: go HERE to view it now.

OCD Action were a great support when we were making the film, having officially endorsed us, and we are very pleased to have continued working with them, so it means a lot that we have been included as a part of the OCD Week of Action (#OCDwoa).

You can also watch it on Vimeo.

A little while ago, we spoke to writer Nick about what inspired him to write the film; here's what he said:
"The simple answer is my own experiences with OCD, but it was because I recognised that my various compulsions and routines were affecting me more and more – becoming more elaborate, requiring more attempts to get them ‘perfect’, and generally causing me more and more frustration. I’d been aware of my OCD for several years but, probably like most people do when they suspect something is ‘wrong’ with them, I dodged the issue for a long time. People with OCD tend to be quite embarrassed by the condition, especially as so much of it is internal – rolling around inside your head – so I kept it to myself and, naturally, it began to spiral. So, for me, writing “For Want Of A Nail” was a cathartic experience.
It was partly an expression of my own OCD and partly a warning to myself. around about the same time, I had seen a few of these ‘quizzes’ on social media – ‘How OCD Are You?’ type junk (oftentimes just pictures of messy rooms with a ‘how uncomfortable does this make you feel?’ one-to-ten scale underneath). I saw that not only were the quizzes themselves drowning in utter ignorance of what OCD is, but I saw that people taking the quizzes were either coming away with the completely wrong idea about the condition, or were actually convinced they had it – some going as far as boasting about it like it was something ‘cool’ to differentiate themselves on Facebook or Twitter. Trust me, an idiotic social media quiz won’t tell you that you’ve got OCD, having OCD will tell you that you’ve got OCD – and everyone who has OCD wishes they didn’t have it."
There were two core intensions for me when writing this film: 1) for the audience to come away with a better understanding of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and 2) for the audience to have also enjoyed the story, the characters, and the style of the film - to have been informed and entertained at the same time.

We are also in the process of pitching a 10-part television series adaptation of #FWOAN right now, so if you want to keep up-to-date with all things For Want Of A Nail by following us on Facebook.

Chopping Mall (Jim Wynorski, 1986) Review

Find more exploitation reviews here.

“I guess I'm not used to being chased around a mall in the middle of the night by killer robots.” The 1980s was the decade when the shopping mall ruled all from the consumerist dream driving the economy to the food court driving teenagers' social engagement. It was a time and a place that was important in people's lives, something worth protecting, but how best to do that? Perhaps big steel time-locked doors and a trio of roaming robots armed with laser eyes? Gee, I sure hope a random lightning storm doesn't scramble their circuits and result in a slew of corpses … oh, hang on, too late!
