So far so good for the ninth season of TWD. Under the leadership of Angela Kang (the new showrunner), the show has rediscovered not only its proper sense of pacing but the central thing that draws you in: interesting characters involved in complex conflicts. Many of the tweaks are subtle, but amount to a large and welcome rejuvenation which has gifted TWD a breath of fresh-but-familiar air. Here's hoping that Kang & Co can keep it up after the well-advertised and imminent departure of Rick Grimes...

It's good to have TWD back, and the season 9 premiere was a good one. So much going on, lots of exciting new groundwork being laid as tensions simmer between post-war communities, and a shocking/satisfying climax that brings one of my favourite bits from the comics to the screen.

So Season 8 and All Out War draws to a close. Over all the episode was satisfying, although it definitely felt too short - it needed to be one of those extended '90 minute' (63 minutes without adverts) long episodes - but considering the 'crossover' event with Fear The Walking Dead, they had to get it all bashed-out inside an hour slot. The climactic battle was surprisingly short-lived, and even though we've been at All Out War throughout the entirety of Season 8, you still needed a bit more just to finish it off in this finale.

However, it was good to see enough time being spent on the initial post-war days, which helped set up a few intriguing bits for later - conflict among allies and a gigantic mega herd of walkers in particular. There have been problems with the show in the last couple of years, but hopefully come Season 9 (with new showrunner Angela Kang) things will tighten up and feel refreshed. Well that's was a full-on feels festival, wasn't it? Aside from one minor gripe (Morgan, ffs, stop looking through your scope and just shoot!) that could have been papered over with quicker and more judicious editing, the mid-season premiere was a real gut puncher. Fathers and Sons the world over will be saying they've got something in their eye with this one. Anyway - onto a couple of memes...

Just the one this week. The last couple of episodes have skewed more towards setting up the mid-season finale, but it was good to see that a couple of questionable decisions last week were paid off here.

We're into the second half of Season 8A now, and All Out War continues apace. This was a really good episode - so much going on - a very satisfying watch. Numerous pairings of characters faced off with each other with so many implications teased, setup, or averted (for now), plus the paranoia of a potential power vacuum (like the crumbling of a nation behind the Iron Curtain) made for much tension and entertainment. Quite possibly my favourite episode of the season thus far.

That's all for this week - it was a good episode, but not particularly meme-inspiring. I think from Season 8 onwards I'll step down a gear and not try to get one for every episode like I've been doing since Season 3 (to appease my completionist nature!), but from Season 8 I'll only do them when something good springs to mind - that's how the best ones usually come about.

We're half way through Season 7B, and three quarters of the way through Season 7 in general. This was a fun episode, it felt a lot like that Rick & Daryl episode from Season 6B in which they first encountered Jesus. Good stuff!
