Flavours of the Month: February 2013...

LOOKS:

Robot Chicken Season 4 & 5

The Walking Dead Season 1 Special Edition 3-disc DVD - I was after this edition of the first season for quite some time, and had to import it as it was never made available in the UK. An excellent set of extras. It's funny to think now of the first two seasons as being somewhat quaint compared to the harsher world presented in season three.

"Cold Shadows" - and so begins the next new script...

I recently spent the first couple of weeks of February doing a final polish on Eyes In Your Window, in advance of entering it into a screenwriting competition (I've now submitted it, so wish me luck) - as such this delayed me a little bit in getting onto my next screenplay, however this turned out to be a good thing. It afforded me time to work out a couple of kinks that needed addressing, and I was able to enact a few newly discovered screenwriting tips (hence the aforementioned final polish for EIYW).

The layout for episode one.

Now though, the new 'next script' is underway - "Cold Shadows" will be a post-watershed television drama series, with a planned layout of six episodes for the first series (and basic ideas in place for what territory series two and three would cover). As is the case, you write the first episode in-full, and then provide a basic rundown of the remainder of the series to give the reader an idea of where it's all going to go.

The first episode of "Cold Shadows" is titled "Uncertainty".

Double Bill Mini Musings: Top Drawer, Bottom Drawer...

Looper:
What's it about?
Rian Johnson's time travel sci-fi thriller set in the near-future where time travel hasn't yet been invented, but in thirty years it will have been. After its invention it is immediately outlawed and becomes the preserve of the mob, who send people they want killed back-in-time for "Loopers" to kill. One day though, each Looper will have to "close their loop" and kill their own future self - however Joe's elder-self has other ideas.
Who would I recognise in it?
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Noah Segan, Jeff Daniels, Paul Dano, Piper Perabo, and Garrett Dillahunt.
Great/Good/Alright/Shite?
The best films, particularly genre films, always have a fantastic central idea to them. In the case of Looper it's the idea of your present self trying to kill your older self who just wants to survive to preserve their own future, and the schism that this presents. Packed full of ideas (an older incarnation of one character finds themselves literally falling apart, for example), Johnson's film is a spectacular mix of mind-bending sci-fi (set in a near-future world that is, for the most part, recognisable), retro chic ("Gat Men", for instance), thoughtful ideas, and blazing action. An instant classic of the genre. Great.

Hooray - TWD is back! Having watched the 2013 Baftas last night (where Argo did quite well), a certain line from Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back got stuck in my head. Indeed, Michael Rooker was in Mallrats.

Aww hell naw ... achievement rescinded.

The back-half of season three is upon us, and technically I did say I'd put up some other TWD memes during the mid-season break, but I just never got around to it - however, here's a couple for the very first episode - "Days Gone Bye".

I always read that sign the wrong way...

Triple Bill Mini Musings: Laws, Victims, and Dictators...

Dredd:
What's it about?
A fresh attempt at turning the long-running British comic book Judge Dredd, from 2000AD, into a movie, after the not-exactly-great Sylvester Stallone version in the 1990s. Dredd and rookie Judge Anderson head to a mega block of flats called Peach Trees after a triple homicide is reported - however, in this crime-ridden 200-storey slum, they're going to be trapped alone together versus the MaMa gang who are pushing a new drug called Slo-Mo on Mega City One.
Who would I recognise in it?
Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Heady, Wood Harris.
Great/Good/Alright/Shite?
Scripted by Alex Garland (28 Days Later), shot by Anthony Dod Mantle (127 Hours, Oscar winning DoP), and directed by Pete Travis (Vantage Point), this fresh take on Judge Dredd is a welcome shot in the arm. Clocking in at a focused 95 minutes, the action comes thick and fast - not-to-mention blood-drenched - as blunt force Dredd and rookie try-out Anderson (a psychic) battle their way through a hellish skyscraper controlled by drug-addled miscreants. Parallels have been drawn to The Raid (tower block, bad guys, lots of arse kicking violence), but the two sit well by themselves and need no comparison. Extremely stylish (the Slo-Mo drug is realised on the screen in super-slow-motion that turns bullets ripping through cheeks into hypnotically beautiful moments), Dredd is sheer balls-out fun.
