The Pyjama Girl Case (Flavio Mogherini, 1978) Blu-Ray Review

Find more giallo reviews here.

“Just because it's written down it's true, huh?” By 1978 the heyday of the Italian murder mystery – or 'giallo' – had been and gone, but that didn't mean there was nothing of interest still to rinse out of the well-strained genre. Writer/Director Flavio Mogherini's murder mystery casts aside much of the classic tropes and visual styling of the typical giallo film (black gloved killers, gleaming knives, an escalating series of grisly deaths, European glamour) in favour of – egads! - just one murder in, of all places, Australia's Sydney with its sun, sea, and sand. Do not go into this movie expecting killer thrills by any means and, whatever you do, don't read the spoilerific blurb on the back of the box!...

Body Melt (Philip Brophy, 1993) Review

Find more exploitation reviews here.

“The first phase is hallucinogenic, the second phase is glandular, and the third phase is … OH GOD!!!” From Street Trash to The Incredible Melting Man as well as The Stuff, the last portion of the 20th Century seemed to have a thing for the ooze-tastic destruction of the human body, almost building upon the 'body horror' of David Cronenberg, albeit in a sleazier and sillier manner. A lesser-known entry in this sub-category of splatter-fuelled flicks is Body Melt, an Australian B-Movie that takes a few cues from Peter Jackson's early films and sprinkles a dusting of 90s rave culture style into the mix – oh, and Harold Bishop from Neighbours is in it, too!

"Gaia" film award - news gets about...

I see the local Bulmer Foundation have put up a little article on their website about the film award that Joe and I won from this year's Campfire Film Festival in Australia. The news was also spread around in various local newspapers, and it's nice to bump into people who you've not seen in years, who spotted the article in their local paper of choice, and offer their thumbs up.

"Gaia: Greek Goddess of Earth" wins award!

"Gaia: Greek Goddess of Earth" - an alternate version of one of the films found in the "Gaia & Genesis" Environmental Ethics DVD - has won an Australasian Best Environmental Film Award. From a field of 85 entrants, our film (Joe Jenkins of Ethics Online wrote the script and directed, while I was in charge of the camera work and editing) was chosen as the winner by the Australian Film Critics Association.

It screened last night (May 12th 2012) at the Campfire Film Festival in Federation Square in Melbourne, Australia. The film is also in general competition at the festival, and is one of the finalists.

Many thanks to Campfire for this award!
